Hot Spot: Apple could be forced by US government to make USB-C iPhones
The Type-C interface, also known as the USB Type-C connector, refers to a port that follows the USB Type-C physical connector standard. It is widely used on modern smart devices such as smartphones, tablets, iPads, and many laptops.

One of the biggest advantages of the Type-C connector is its reversible design, which means there is no “right side up” when plugging it in. Users can insert the connector in either direction, making it much more convenient than previous USB connectors.
Internally, a USB Type-C connector contains four pairs of TX/RX differential signal lines, including:
- Two pairs for USB D+ / D- data transmission
- One pair of SBU (Sideband Use) signal lines
- Two CC (Configuration Channel) pins
- Four VBUS power pins
- Four Ground (GND) pins
Compared with previous USB connector standards, the Type-C interface offers faster charging speeds, higher data transfer rates, and greater versatility. As a result, many manufacturers have adopted USB Type-C as the standard interface for their devices.

Why Was the Type-C Connector Developed?
The USB Type-C connector exists because technology and industry standards have continuously evolved.
When smartphones first became popular, most mobile devices used Micro-USB or Mini-USB connectors. Computers mainly used USB Type-A ports, while printers commonly relied on USB Type-B connectors.
These connector standards were not created by individual manufacturers. Instead, they were established by industry organizations made up of hardware manufacturers and software developers. Once a standard was adopted, hardware and software manufacturers were expected to ensure compatibility with that standard.
USB Type-C was later developed as a new generation of USB connectors based on the evolution of earlier USB Type-A and Type-B standards. Although it replaces many older connector types, it is fundamentally a new physical connector designed to meet the increasing demands of modern electronic devices.
Key Features of the Type-C Interface
Among all USB connector standards, USB Type-C provides some of the most significant improvements for modern smart devices.
Its most recognizable feature is the reversible connector design. Users no longer need to worry about plugging the cable in upside down, reducing wear on both the connector and the device while making everyday use much more convenient.

Because USB Type-C is a newer generation standard, it also delivers faster data transfer speeds and better video transmission performance than previous USB connectors.
Even Apple’s Lightning connector, which was once exclusive to iPhones, has gradually been replaced by USB Type-C. In addition, the European Union passed legislation requiring many electronic devices sold in Europe to adopt USB Type-C as their standard charging interface starting in the autumn of 2024.
